The process of creating an illustration for a particular product or project is not only about visual expression. There’s much more behind it, as in any type of design process: apart from the illustrator’s knowledge, effort, and practical skills, it also includes research, analysis, idea and composition search, working out the best color solution, and many other aspects leading to a needed outcome. In the case of creating a consistent set of illustrations, the process gets even deeper and more extended to reach the systematic design approach. That’s what we are going to talk about today: Tubik illustrator Yaroslava Yatsuba is ready to unveil her creative approach to illustration sets and share a bunch of handy tips for illustrators. Join in!

illustration-set-process

Whatever is your artistic manner and workstyle, the major advice from our illustrator is like that: never stop where you are. Only the constant learning process can allow you to achieve creative development and not to get stuck on the sidelines of the information field.

But how to search for the needed data and process it properly?

These are the questions Yaroslava asked herself working on a new set of illustrations called Curious Cat. In addition, in this art project, she wanted to try new stylistic techniques that are often found in printed graphics but rarely in web illustrations.

Practical advice: If you want to reinforce and develop a certain stylistic skill, work on a consistent set of illustrations, not a single artwork. In this case, you get a hand in it, your creative approach is more systematic and complex. What’s more, you will tackle the difficulties which may not arise in one piece of art, and the customer, seeing a series of artworks, will catch the general style more accurately and understand that this artwork is not just accidental something taken out of thin air.

Stage 1: Color Palette

In this case, the artist proceeded from a style that was based on imitation of manual printing graphics. So, she chose 3 primary colors, the overlay of which would give her all the necessary palette and convey the spirit of screen printing. To reach that effect, she selected a brush in Procreate that creates the necessary texture. A more time-consuming but also the more effective method is creating your own brushes using textures from real materials. Yaroslava also added a neutral gray color and a couple of paper textures to the palette.

color-palette-illustration-process

Stage 2: Theme

The artist was looking for an abstract theme that could have a logical sequence of illustrations and, at the same time, encourage her to search for new expressive techniques and compositions.

As a result, the choice was focused on the theme called Process, so the illustrations aimed at reflecting various stages of the research and creation process. Also, this series had a mascot character: the curious and clever Cat.

The illustrator took the basic and crucial stages of the creative process as themes for the illustrations in the set:

  • statement of a question
  • research
  • data systematization
  • analysis of the received data
  • hypotheses
  • solution

Stage 3: Process

It’s easy to see that the creative process starts much before the first line or word gets down on paper, canvas, or artboard. So, the set of artworks about the Curious Cat reflects will help us to define, describe, and illustrate the design flow for a series of digital illustrations.  If you project this list of points onto the creative process for illustration, then it might flow in the following way.

Statement of the question

  • What goals do I set for myself?
  • What do I want to achieve?
  • Which illustrators do I like?
  • What is in their work that caught my attention?
  • What is my work missing?
  • What skills would I like to upgrade?
  • How can I reveal the topic?

It doesn’t mean to ask these questions all together at once, it’s enough to concentrate on a couple of aspects that are of interest at the moment since the tasks change and the entire analysis process needs to be done anew each time.

curious-cat-illustrations-question

Research

This stage includes collecting references, selecting works of illustrators whose work inspires you, reading articles on the topic under study (in this case, about different kinds and approaches to the creative process), or perhaps even not this topic directly but the one that will really motivate you to work (for example, biographies of famous creative people you like), and creating a library or mood board of photo fragments you like.

curious-cat-illustrations-research

Data systematization

It is a vital stage. It defines how you processed the information gathered at the previous stages and were able to structure it. For example:

  • The works of this group of illustrators catch my attention and emotions with the transfer of movement.
  • In this group of photographs, I adore a beautiful combination of colors.
  • The description I read in the article helps to convey the problem more precisely.

curious-cat-illustrations-Systematization

Data Analysis

Analysis of the obtained data in case of the illustration process lies in the:

  • creation of sketches
  • trying various color selections
  • thinking over the plot
  • considering a character image.

curious-cat-illustrations-Analysis

The artist realized that this particular project needed a character. It was the best was to reach the consistency and united look of the different artworks. What’s more, the character was effective in clarifying the terminology and actions as well as humanizing and personalizing quite abstract notions and phenomena.

Here you can see the search process for the character images that went through several iterations before the Curious Cat was found as the best choice.

curious-cat-illustrations-character-design

Hypotheses

This stage goes in parallel with the analysis. And often, for illustrators, it looks like creating sketches and possible variations, ideas on how you can get the best for the required plot, which composition, angle, or shape is more advantageous for conveying the essence, which colors will emphasize the mood and set the needed atmosphere.

character-design-process

curious-cat-illustrations-Hypothesis

Solution

The solution is the sum of all the stages passed and implemented in the illustration. The final result may seem simple and uncomplicated at first glance, but only after deep processing and analyzing the information, this result will be not random or accidental but will be based on experience and practice. What’s more, the set of illustrations opens a broader perspective for visual storytelling.

curious-cat-illustrations-Solution

Hopefully, the stages described above will motivate you to try such a systematic approach in your illustration experience. Also, welcome to check more practical tips and examples by Yaroslava: in our earlier articles, she shared guides on how to build up your original style of illustration and also, she shared the creative process step-by-step in the case studies on narrative illustration, interface illustration, and theme illustration devoted to the Olympic Games.

Among all the numerous benefits of illustrations, there is a superpower to tell the story with pictures. It often happens in various projects that designers have to create a series of artworks united by one plot and characters. It demands a complex approach and working out the specific details.

The term “illustration” originates from the Latin “illustrare” whose meaning is to light up, illuminate, explain. An illustration may either serve as a supplement to the text or fully replace it. The series of illustrations can tell a kind of small story by means of visuals. It has to be clear and transfer the needed message properly.

To show it in the real project, in this case study, we are unveiling the design process on the narrative digital illustration by Tubik designer Yaroslava Yatsuba. Earlier we shared her tips on creating flat illustrations and the case study on sports illustration. This time you are welcome to check how the set of narrative illustrations was created for a cartoon “Paris Je T’aime”.

Project

Creating the series of narrative illustrations for the story “Paris Je T’aime”.

Process

Idea

The story features the adventures of the cute and cheerful dachshund Tubik in Paris. The initial volume of graphics set for the project was around 10 digital illustrations.

Stage 1. Rough Pencil Sketch

At this stage, the designer made research, collected references, and analyzed them. The first sketch was made frontal as at this phase it was important to catch the idea, the sequence of scenes, and plot while the composition could be worked out later. In the process, the number of shots was reduced from 12 to 8: the designer left only the most recognizable landmarks and united some illustrations into one.

First quick sketch

graphic-design-illustration-sketch
A bit more detailed working out one of the illustrations.

Stage 2. Compositional Sketch

Having developed the draft storyboard, Yaroslava moved to work on the elaborate drawing which will become the basis of the digital illustration. Here she considered the composition of a shot, try interesting perspectives and stylistic effects. So, she redrew the sketch from the perspective of the dog’s eye, added the effect of the Fish-eye lens and made the angle of descent steeper. All that added dynamics, drive, and fun to the illustration.

graphic-design-illustration-sketch

Working out the main character

Together with composition, the designer developed the image of the main character, a funny dachshund dog. First, she drew 6 different concepts for finding its looks.

graphic-design-illustration-sketch

Then she worked out the digital image for the chosen concept.

dog-character-design

Having made a choice on one of the variants, she worked on the dynamics of its movements as the plot required to show that the dog runs across Paris twining round it.

Designer’s tip: Study the books on character animation, they teach much about transitions and movements.

Stage 3. Color and Texture

Color
After setting up the composition and appearance of the main character, the designer drew that all in vector and moved to one of the hardest artistic challenges – the choice of the color palette. She wanted to make the illustrations bright and catchy so the choice was made on juicy colors. In the final set, there were 6 colors plus white.

Textures
Textures and ragged edges add originality to illustrations. For this series, the designer used the object’s masks and art brushes for the outline. That added the feeling of hand-drawn book illustrations.

Most of the design case studies in our blog are devoted to creating interfaces, illustrations, and branding for digital products. Today’s case is different: it’s about the design of the branding for a real physical product whose main goal is entertainment and fun. Welcome to check the design story of how the Tubik Studio designer Marina Solomennikova worked on the logo and mascot design for a fun party game called Dicey.

Project

Dicey is a super cheerful and unpredictable party game for adults. As it often happens, creators came up with something for themselves and then shared it with the world: after getting bored playing the same drinking games over and over, they decided to create a new one—something fresh, exciting, and inclusive. So, they developed a simple concept focused around 4 different card categories: Group Play, Face Off, Wild Card, and Rules. Each category contains hilarious minigames designed to encourage creativity and group interaction. So, the target audience of the game is social drinkers of legal drinking age. It was aimed at groups of 4 or more participants and had to create camaraderie through a one-of-a-kind social gaming experience.

Here’s a quick introduction on how to play:

dicey game rules

The task for the designer was to create a logo and a funny character that would catch attention, looked original, created the needed atmosphere and mood. Actually, that was one of the primary reasons for the clients to reach our team: they wanted to build the brand strategy around an illustrated character. As they mentioned in the brief, “the character should be reflective of the game itself—playful, mischievous, and a little bit goofy. Ideally, the character will appear frequently on our social media channels and branded swag.” So, from the start, the designer had to keep in mind that the images obtained as the result of the design process will be used for both print and digital.

The idea of a mascot was totally reasonable for the brand goals. The business practice of successful companies shows that a well-crafted mascot can work even more effectively than product endorsement with the help of a famous person. Mascots can reflect any traits of character, any style needed for product positioning and communicate via a diverse set of visuals. They broaden the horizons of personification. With mascots, designers and marketing specialists can create unexpected and catchy looks or make fantastic characters alive.

Let’s check what we came to.

The creative process for this project didn’t get separate parts for logo and mascot character design. Even at the initial stage of pencil sketching, the designers searched for the interaction and composition of both. Below you can see the sketches featuring the stage of the creative process: here the illustrator showed several different stylistic directions for a character and possible style of wordmark to match.

dicey-design-case-study-mascot-sketching

Although all the options were catchy and playful, there wasn’t much discussion about the choice: the variant that transformed a special polygonal dice from the game into the funny character was agreed upon as the best choice. So, the designer moved on to creating a digital version. So, meet Dicey monster, whose motto is “Up to no good”. He is a real symbol of the fun-loving chaos and mischievousness the game brings out.

dicey-monster-case-study-design-1

The wordmark uses smooth lines, it’s elegant and stylish but also playful and friendly. Here it is in black-and-white variants.

As the brand sign was intended for social media graphics as well, the designer offered several color options for banners, avatars, etc.

The concept of the branded stickers looked this way.

dicey design case study logo mascot

Then the designer worked on the stylistics of the play cards. Again, it started with sketches to find the compositions that would reflect the key message.

dicey design case study logo mascot

After deciding upon the concept, the designer digitized the mascot illustrations for the play cards and cards of a tutorial with the instructions. Here are two concepts of card design with different typography. What’s more, one version features the text in all caps, while the other uses the title case for the card names. Anyway, both fonts look funny and entertaining. The cards show how flexible is the mascot to show the variety of moods, feelings, situations, and messages to the player.

The new name is ready to get introduced in fresh D4U Inspiration issue and today it’s all about illustration. Let’s look into digital art by Therese Larsson, the artist based in Stockholm, Sweden. She has been working as a freelance illustrator since 2006 specializing in character design and realism. What makes her portfolio really special is the variety of animals presented in diverse environments. She doesn’t just show the easily recognizable and naturalistic animal appearance, which she is the real master of, but also lets the viewer feel the mood and personality of every character, the feelings and emotions they have, the situations they experience. The illustration demonstrates the broad knowledge of animal anatomy, physiology, motion physics on which the thoughtful approach to art is based even in cases when the artist works on the image of fantastic creatures. Such a fruitful combination of realistic art skills, fun, humor and creativity also allows the artist to create catchy and cute images for advertising campaigns.

So, let’s get inspired with this artistic animal kingdom.

Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light. (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban)

If you’re glad to see owls around your house, look suspiciously at people in hoods, smile passing by the 9th and 10th train platforms, and still wait for one specific letter then you’re certainly a potterhead as well as a half of the world.

This year is the 20th anniversary since the first book was published and all the fans feel nostalgic and a bit sad because the story has ended. Nevertheless, potterheads have nothing to complain about. Last year has brought two more stories about the favorite world and characters. The first was “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”, a play written by Jack Thorne (based on an original story by Thorne and J. K. Rowling). It presents the events nineteen years after the Battle of Hogwarts. Fans can finally learn what happened to their beloved characters and what life they experience after all the horrors they’ve been through. In autumn of the same year, a film director David Yates has released a spin-off called “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” and the world has caught new hype. The story about Newt Scamander and his unusual pets surprised not only Harry Potter fans but also caught the attention of other fantasy lovers. Moreover, the film has touched the uncovered story of Dumbledore’s life so potterheads are excited about the next part which is promised to be released in 2018.

All in all, it’s hard to say how much the story about the wizard boy has influenced the world. J.K. Rowling has started a new culture uniting millions of people around the world. The books about Harry Potter have taught many children to love reading as well as they’ve shown adults that there is always room for magic in our lives.

The magnificent story is a source of inspiration for many artists. Amateurs and professionals create their original artworks showing the characters from different sides. On 31th of July, J.K. Rowling and Harry Potter are celebrating their birthdays. D4U wishes them all the best and presents the collection of digital artworks devoted to Harry and his friends.

Happy Birthday, Harry Potter! Spirit of Magic in Digital Art.

When you play a game of thrones you win or you die. (George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones)

On the 16 of July, HBO studio finally released the first episode of the Game of Thrones season 7, one of the most expected TV shows of 2017. For more than a year, the fans have been waiting for the premiere and here it goes!

There are fans, haters, and those who are apathetic but it’s hard to find a person who never heard of the GoT. It’s all started in 1996 when George R. R. Martin has published “A Song of Ice and Fire”, the first novel out of the GoT series. Readers opened something new and refreshing since the novel had its unique style and the whole new world inside. Within the next decade, the author presented three new novels continuing the story and two short prequel novellas. By 2007 the epic story had gained such popularity that HBO Productions decided to purchase the television rights for the whole series.

After the first season of the TV show, the story received another half of fans and the world has caught a new hype. At some point, the TV show stopped duplicating the plot of the novels. At first, they’ve changed small details and then key moments including the death of certain characters. As it usually happens, many people criticized such a decision still it didn’t hurt high rating of the show.

Now people have two different stories to follow. However, while TV show fans can enjoy new episodes of the favorite story, readers are forced to wait “The Winds of Winter” novel which Martin has been writing since 2011. The date of release hasn’t been announced yet. All we know is that it’s closer than ever before.

Naturally, today’s D4U inspiration collection is devoted to all the GoT fans of both, books and TV show. We gathered illustrations which bring the unforgettable atmosphere of Westeros.
